Cardiff Commitment in Action this National Apprenticeships Week

Cardiff Commitment in Action this National Apprenticeships Week

It’s National Apprenticeships Week this week (8th-12th of Feb) with the theme of ‘Build the Future’, showcasing the importance of Apprenticeships and how they help build strong foundations for the economy and society here in Cardiff, while also securing bright futures for the Apprentices themselves.

Over the past year the Education Directorate within the Council has appointed many apprentices to work alongside them and help with various services.

The Cardiff Commitment team currently have two apprentices, a Marketing Apprentice and a Project Officer. Here’s what they have to say about Cardiff Councils Apprenticeship Scheme:

Elen – “While the pandemic introduced a new challenge of working from home, I believe the shift to working virtually has allowed me to further expand my knowledge of digital marketing. My confidence has greatly improved through attending virtual meetings with internal and external partners which will set me up for my future roles.”

Kathryn – As a disabled person I found it very difficult to get back into work after a long absence. This apprenticeship has given me a steady income, new skills and a great starting point for a career, and it has also given me a sense of purpose and greater confidence in myself and my abilities. It is well worth applying for an apprenticeship role; it will help you improve your skills and learn new things whilst working towards a qualification and building your resume.”

Rhian, an Apprentice Management Information Officer, discusses her experiences and the benefits of the scheme: “The role provided through the scheme gave me the confidence, qualification and a wide range of skills to successfully apply for a permanent position in my team within the first 6 months. It’s given me connections within local authorities, government and private bodies that will become useful within my career.”

Anyone over 16, living in Wales and not in full time education can apply for an apprenticeship in a wide range of sectors and highly-renowned companies, ranging from ITV to Renishaw!

As an apprentice they will:

  • Work alongside experienced staff
  • Gain job specific skills
  • Gain a qualification
  • Earn a wage and get holiday pay
  • Get time to study
