Cardiff Commitment recognised as a model of best practice in national post-16 education report

The Welsh Parliament’s Routes into Post-16 Education and Training report has recognised the Cardiff Commitment as a leading example of how collaboration between employers, schools and the community can improve outcomes for young people.

The report, published by the Senedd’s Children, Young People and Education Committee, explored how young people across Wales move from school into further education, training and work. Among its 16 recommendations, it highlights the Cardiff Commitment as an example of best practice in linking employers with education, and calls on the Welsh Government to consider expanding this successful model to other parts of Wales.

A partnership delivering real results

The Cardiff Commitment brings together over 400 organisations who have pledged to work together to connect young people with opportunities in the city’s growing industries. The programme has delivered:

  • Over 450 work experience placements across Cardiff schools;

  • Targeted programmes supporting young people with Additional Learning Needs and Children Looked After;

  • A growing network of employer partners;

  • Recognition as Public Sector Organisation of the Year at the 2024 UK Social Mobility Awards.

The report notes that initiatives like the Cardiff Commitment are helping to strengthen links between education and the world of work, giving young people vital experience and insight into future career paths while helping employers develop their future talent pipelines.

A call to action for businesses

As the report recommends exploring ways to expand the Cardiff Commitment’s approach across Wales, local employers have an important role to play. By offering work experience, mentoring or skills-based activities, businesses can help ensure that every young person in Cardiff has the chance to realise their potential and gain the skills our economy needs.
