St Teilo’s Experiences of Work Pilot

The Cardiff Commitment, Careers Wales, First Campus and Speakers for Schools have developed an ambitious Experiences of Work Pilot with St Teilo’s High School in Cardiff. The Experiences of Work Programme is a partnership between Industry, Schools, Careers Wales, First Campus and Speakers for Schools. The pilot that commenced on the 10th of December will deliver a programme of career exploration events and experiences spanning the whole school delivered collaboratively from a variety of businesses and stakeholders.

The businesses delivering opportunities include PwC, Bouygues UK, BAM Construction and Cardiff and Vale Health Board, and will aim to motivate, inspire and raise pupil’s ambitions and raise awareness of the variety of different learning pathways within the world of work. The industry partners will support a ‘Business Forum’ as part of the Experiences of Work Pilot, working with the school to develop and enhance knowledge, skills and experiences for staff and pupils from our regional growth sectors.

The specially developed activities will allow young people to have increased awareness of higher education and improved educational attainment in Science, Mathematics, ICT and Language while complimenting and enriching the school’s curriculum activities and schedule.

The Experiences of Work pilot will aim to explore the potential impact of offering a full spectrum and package of ‘experiences of work’ to build ever-lasting sustainable good practice within schools.

The Experiences of Work pilot aims to challenge barriers associated with social mobility, additional learning needs, disabilities and gender and race stereotypes and develop parent/career aspirations with regard to education and career pathways for their children. The programme will aim to decrease the number of ‘NEET’ young people, in particular from vulnerable groups such as Children Looked After, low-income families.

The partnership delivering the pilot is an opportunity to ensure that the needs and vision of industry and business across growth sectors in the Cardiff Capital Region are aligned to the ambition, opportunities and skills children and young people need and are exposed to in Cardiff Schools.

In partnership, the Cardiff Commitment, Careers Wales, First Campus, Speakers for Schools and employers will raise awareness of the breadth of career opportunities available in the Cardiff Capital Region and develop their skills to sculpt the future growth for the benefit of all. Our focus will be on enhancing the Curriculum for Wales and supporting schools across Cardiff with access to knowledge, skills and experiences that bring the curriculum to life and make teaching and learning relevant for the children and young people of today for the jobs of tomorrow.
